W5: The Season End and Finals Preview

18 May | MUD Newsdesk

Spring's short season came to its regular end this week with most playoff seeds up for grabs. That said, Founding Fathers grabbed the #1 seed after a 15-9 Sunday win over the roster-depleted Danger Disc. HitchHuckers were poised to challenge Dad for that top seed, but after a 15-12 loss to Martinis & Cake on Sunday, they fell to a certain #2 seed. Cinco de Bobo, this season's bottom feeder, settled into its inevitable #8 seed after going 1-1 at Inwood. Somewhat respectably, however, Bobo beat Zoo Manatee, 14 to 9, and barely lost to Rump, 14 to 15.

The #3 through #6 seeds, like a Hunt Clark pull, remained airborne despite the weekend games. The Wonders, however, wouldn't get a chance to enter the middle mix up after Tuesday's game was rained out and they settled into the #7 seed. For the other four teams, it wasn't until Founding Fathers romped Rump the evening before Finals (15 to 9) that the middle seeds were decided.

After a 5-5 season, Martinis & Cake got away with the #3 seed by one differential point. They may be struggling come finals. Their main handler and co-captain Christian Gaffney is bound by professional ultimate obligations to be elsewhere on Saturday. And we just received word that Brittany Kaplan, Martinis' other captain, will have to leave before finals. Their first round is against three-time champion Steve Nicolson and Rump. Good luck, perhaps above all with morale, M&C.

Oh the Zoo-Manatee! grabbed the #4 seed after a revenge win over Bobo on Wednesday evened their record to 6-6. Frazer and Jordan were the surprise winners of the fall season. And while they don't have the luxury of entering this tournament in last place, they still have a significant challenge on Saturday.

Zoo's first round is against the #5 seeded Danger Disc, whose co-captain Fred Merkel has claimed, "We had the best draft, for sure." While Fred and Jeannine's 5-6 regular season hasn't quite backed up that claim, anyone who has been to a MUD finals knows that good rosters tend to show up. Look for Danger Disc to be a nightmare matchup for any of the higher seeds, especially in the first round.

Lowly Rump rounds out the 9:30am pack as the #6 seed. Finishing 5-7, Rump has quite a bit left to do if Big Nics wants to extend his legendary Spring string. Plagued by injuries, and absentees (Kuo), Rump has a few believers who think this weekend is going to bear witness to some Nicolson magic. It's tough to argue with all those spring rings.

W4: Games Galore, Bobo Scores, and 100 More

12 May | MUD Newsdesk

The Inwood scene on Sunday was reminiscent of Puebla in 1862. And just as the Mexican Army surprisingly defeated the confident invading French troops, Bobo celebrated the honoring weekend by gaining its first victory of the season over sluggish Zoo-Manatee, 15 to 9. Meanwhile, Founding Fathers spanked Rump, and though they allowed a small end-game comeback, the Founders won 15 to 10.

In the second round, both Rump and Zoo got their revenge. Rump, acting like the reconstituted French, said "remember what happened after the Battle of Puebla?" and vanquished Bobo's Mexican ghosts, 15 to 8. Zoo, however, seemed headed toward an "Oh! and two" Inwood Sunday when Dad went up 13 to 10. But Zoo rallied it to 14s. After an overthrown hammer blew the Fathers' chance for a showboat win, Zoo ran the field and scored the universe point.

Riverside saw every scheduled game go off for only the second time this season. It all started Sunday when The Wonders did their 15-7 thing against Martinis & Cake, and then HitchHuckers picked up a 15-11 win on Danger Disc.

Tuesday was a yet another potential history-making matchup this season (see below). This game was between Danger and Zoo. The Manatees got the victory at 14 to 9, which was the same score of Founding Fathers' Wednesday evening win over the savage Wonders.

On Thursday, Nicki Minaj had been on Ellen during the day (DeGeneres, by the way, is infamous in the NYC ultimate community because her Summer 2007 central park concert forced a postponement of that league's finals to the rainy, awful following weekend). However, despite Minai's appearance, Rump couldn't manage a win against HitchHuckers. Hitch won 12 to 8. Friday evening was this week's feature. Roll tape.

Merkel's MUD Milestone in Week Three

5 May | MUD Newsdesk

Zoo-Manatee woke up early enough on Sunday to drop a burning hulk of points on Rump and win the Riverside noon game 15 to 13. Next up, Founding Fathers, shaken from their sloppy W2 showing against the suddenly dangerous HitchHuckers, seemed to get their groove back. Dad beat up on Martinis & Cake 15 to 7.

HitchHuckers, meanwhile, rolled on at Inwood and won their 4th and 5th games in-a-row against The Wonders (12-11) and then Danger Disc (15-4!). Though neither could handle Hitch, Danger and the Wonders got their acts together in respective matches against Cinco de Bobo. Still with no reason to shake a maraca this season, Bobo lost to Danger, 14 to 9, and then was trounced by The Wonders, 15 to 5. Next Sunday is the morrow of Bobo's namesake. Can they get their party started on Seis de Mayo?

Tuesday's game between Rump and Martinis was rained out, but Wednesday's brought a twinkle to the parity-advocating eye of Commissioner Suntaree. Bobo, in all his misery, met Jeff's hot HitchHuckers. To everyone's surprise Bobo turned a 1-4 deficit into an 8-4 taking of half. Hitch battled back, and as the East River soccer players started waving 8pm permits around, Hitch was up 10 to 9. Just before the Commish called the game, Bobo sneaked in the tying score and that's how it ended.

Thursday was drenched, but with a little midday cleanup and a fun-friendly parks official, the game was a go. Zoo Manatees hoped to ride their bloated spirit against the Founding Fathers. It wasn't going to happen. Fathers won 15 to 9 with dominant second-half zones on Zoo's lack of handlers. Friday's game outlasted the sunset. The Wonders' dark grey made it almost impossible for them to see each other. Danger Disc, in bright blue, had less of a problem. And though Fred Merkel didn't catch the winning score, his team, at 15 to 13, won their noteworthy fourth game of the season.

Cancellation for some, Perfection for Huckers

28 April | MUD Headquarters

Week Two: Due to rain, only Inwood games were allowed on Sunday. HitchHuckers began their perfect week savage, yet they managed two 10-9 universe point wins at the way uptown fields. The first was against the persistent spring-league victor Steve Nicolson and his Rump. The next was an avenging win against Zoo-Manatee, going 1-1 with those animals on the season. The Huckers hitched their third and final win of the week against the previously undefeated Founding Fathers when the rain let up on Friday. With clever zones and help from the wind, the Huckers turned their opponent into the Confounded Fathers and won 11 to 8.

Week One Scores and More

21 April | MUD Newsdesk

Teams have been named and bannered here in Spring 2012's first week and the week-one scores are in. Opening Sunday commenced at "no-cleats" Riverside with Steve Nicolson's Rump squashing Cinco de Bobo, 15 to 8 in the noon game. At 2pm, disaster enthusiasts Frazer and Jordan conjured up 1937's Herbert Morrison and a floating, flaming sea cow as "Oh, the Zoo-Manatee!" began the season on fire and beat Jeff and his HitchHuckers, 15 to 12.

Inwood's newly-planted, freshly-sprouted grass was ripe for trampling and soon we were amidst the dust clouds. Christian and BKap's Martinis & Cake spent the first part of the afternoon properly sippin' a 15 to 8 victory against Reynaldo's The Wonders. On the other sand slope, Mateo, in a most-winning-captains battle against Fred Merkel, led the Founding Fathers, to a narrow defeat of Fred's Danger Disc. It was 15 to 14.

To close the day, Danger Disc, which features Jeannine Opie as co-captain, took it right into The Wonders, winning 15 to 8. Then Founding Fathers became the first WW Club members of the season with a delicious second win over Martinis & Cake, 15 to 11.

During the week, the Fathers found a monumental victory (see below) over Cinco de Bobo, 15 to 8. At East River, Martinis shook the Hitchhuckers 15 to 12. The Wonders got their first win against Rump at 10 to 8 on Thursday. And, on Friday, Zoo-Manatee forced Danger Disc into a week-one losing record by defeating Danger, 15 to 8.
