MUD's Lingo GuideEver wonder what your teammates are yelling when you're on the field or when you're enjoying a refreshing beverage on the sideline after a hard-earned point? We’re here to help with our handy guide to ultimate jargon. TERM: 7 on the LineMeaning:Yelled by one or both teams to signal the game is beginning. In competitive play, points may be assessed for one team being late at the start of the game. Not to be confused with:Any "Game Seven" where a championship hangs in the balance. Ultimate is not that serious, you know. TERM: PullMeaning:The act of one team throwing the disc to the other team to start the point. Akin to the kickoff of an American football game. Not to be confused with:The yell you make to signal the release of a ceramic disc into the air so that you can blast the hurtling target into smithereens. TERM: StackMeaning:Lining-up relative to the thrower (either horizontally or vertically), thereby streamlining the offense and opening space on the field in which players can cut. Not to be confused with:Delicious golden hot pancakes covered in syrupy goodness. TERM: DUMPMeaning:(Verb) The act of making a short, safe throw to a teammate who is usually behind you. Often used in combination with "Swing." (Noun) To be "the dump," is to be the person who bails a teammate out of a high stall count or risky throw by positioning oneself in close proximity for a short, sweet pass - which too is called "a dump." Not to be confused with:Your pad. Your poop. TERM: HuckMeaning:Throwing a long pass in hopes of gaining big yards. Think endzone to endzone. Not to be confused with:Your Uncle Buck or Chuck or any meandering adolescents on the Mississippi. TERM: FlowMeaning:Usually refers to a sequence of well-executed passes by the offense which utilizes field space and cutting to good advantage. Not to be confused with:Turbulence. We’re looking for something more laminar. TERM: MarkMeaning:The act of defending the player with the disc and initiating a stall count. Not to be confused with:The first command from the race starter. You know, two counts before the gun fires. TERM: Stall CountMeaning:The ten second count within which the thrower must release the disc. The penalty for exceeding the stall count is a turnover. Not to be confused with:The airspeed at which a flying object loses upward pressure and loses airworthiness and starts to resemble your hammer throw. TERM: ForceMeaning:The direction in which the Marker attempts to force the thrower to toss the disc. Commonly determined on the line, prior to each point, as: "Force Home" / "Force Away" or "Force Flick" / Force Backhand." Not to be confused with:Insert your own generic Star Wars joke here. TERM: StrikeMeaning:May be yelled by a defending player or sideline enthusiast indicating the Marker should briefly switch the force to the opposite direction (usually only for a one or two count before switching back). Not to be confused with:The sound umpires often make when ultimate players are forced, in some cruel joke, to play America’s past time on the rich lush Central Park fields that are otherwise denied to them. |
